I agree with this to an extent, but anyone who criticizes the capabilities of the LCS have not seen how incapable the Perry class is.

Was a mistake to decommission all the OHPs to begin with. They should have seen a modernization plan commencing with the decommissioning of the SM-1 missile they originally wielded and the removal of their missile launchers.

Still, even the "defanged" OHPs were more capable warships than the LCSs.

The Navy has a lot of experience in changing out the control systems on ships like these, most of the remaining Ticonderoga class ships have had their old engineering consoles removed and replaces with more modern systems based on what's been fielded on the Arleigh Burke class ships. These are basically the same as what's on the America class LHAs.

The Navy could put a small 8-12 cell VLS launcher on the bow where the old Mk 13 launchers used to be. Not sure if the hull can handle a VLS launcher that can fire SM-2s or Tomahawks (though lets face it, 8-12 cells wouldn't make for much of a strike platform) but at least stick some ESSMs in there.
