There were many "Germans" who joined ISIS. However, most of them were not really Germans at all. Many were immigrants or children of immigrants. Very few can trace their heritage back several generations to actual Germany.

Isn't that worse in many ways? A native who takes things for granted as opposed to someone who has seen a better life & turned their back?

It is worse. Too many folks are not thankful for what they have. I remember when I was stationed in Germany in 1981, I was often thanked by the older folks for all the US did for Germany after WWII. The younger folks, not so much.
