AS a rescue-trained scuba diver I would not have hesitated unless my own life was at risk -- but in no case would I have failed to summon emergency assistance. I ended up potentially saving 3 adolescents lives on a canoeing trip in southern Mississippi back in mid 2003. I got beat up pretty bad from the rocks and current, but I never thought about it actually. It wasn't until all of us were several hundred yards downstream when we all accounted for ourselves and the canoes to make sure we were all alive. Thankfully, we all were and only managed scrapes and bruises mostly.
