To be fair, I don't think that flag officers were happy when Harry Truman integrated the armed forces, a move that predated integration in the civil community by more than a decade. Indeed, it could be argued that it helped further civilian integration.
Is this the equivalent? I don't think so, but I could be wrong. At least President Trump has given the Left another cause for their heads to explode and of this, I thoroughly approve.

Yes retired flag/general officers do. It's a good thing the currently active officers opinion is what matters on the policy as they engage the leaders (officers and enlisted) under them.

MSgt James Mullis - Commanders are replaced by Presidents all the time. Mattis was replaced sooner than expected but still served the Obama administration till retiring in 2013; note he was CENTCOM CDR for 2 years when replaced, that isn't unusual at all. Kelly also continued to serve several positions from Iraq to SecDef staff to SOUTHCOM and was never forced to retire. Neither forced to retire under Obama in disgrace like Flynn and McChrystal. So presidents replacing his commanders for disagreements in policy or subpar performance is status quo; to fired in disgrace and force into retirement is rare and neither Kelly nor Mattis fit that second description like Petraeus, Flynn and McChrystal did. Was that enough research for you.
