While results were horrific, the two atomic bombs prevented what would have been even more terrible.

Unfortunately civilians don't think about the Allied loss. The civilians only look at the Japanese civilian losses. I would rather have the enemy die for their country than me die for mine and I not go home. Arm chair quarterbacks have the luxury of being able to access post war records from the Japanese and second guess the commanders in the field.

It promised to be the worst bloodbath in history. The casualty estimates would have been exceeded several times over. Thankfully, the Americans, especially Truman, were horrified by the battle for Okinawa and chose instead to use the atomic bombs. Those who rail against that decision today are simply ignorant of the history
