A lot of folks on social media were upset at the idea of a White Lives Matter - Unite the Right rally at Texas A&M. I was particularly upset not at the theme of the rally since free speech is fine as long as it remains peaceful, but at the insult that it was intentionally planned for the anniversary of 9/11. I've condemned in the past other protests (BLM, National Anthem, etc.) that were also on 9/11. Glad it's cancelled even though it was cancelled for other reasons.

Good! I can't think of a dumber idea for a protest, unless your goal was to create a riot.

The last time this idiot got space on campus, his group was meeting in a conference room. The counter-protest filled Kyle Field. It made me proud to be an Aggie.

If this group wants to assemble on campus, they have a right. The school doesn't have to give them a room, but they can't stop them from doing it.
Denying these crazy groups gives them more visibility and power. Better to allow it, and keep everyone safe.

CSM David Heidke - yes, that is the text of the First Amendment, but it does not address the case law that addresses time, manner, and place restrictions. See Gremillion v. NAACP (1961), Cox v. Louisiana (1965), Cox v. New Hampshire (1941), and so on. For a university's ability to impose those restrictions, see Christian Legal Society v. Univ. of California (2010). The safety of the public is a content neutral grounds for a restriction, and a university is not a traditional public forum, but is a limited pubic forum.

Nothing in the first amendment says they can choose what speech is acceptable. As a matter of fact the Skokie case specifies that a decision cannot be arbitrarily made.

CSM David Heidke - gee, I guess all that time I spent in law school learning how the Constitution and the First Amendment worked was wasted. Learning how to research Supreme Court decisions that explicitly point out that the government can impose time, manner and place restrictions on speech, so long as there is a compelling government interest and the reason is content neutral--I should have just asked you.

I think the theme of the would-have-been rally was disgusting and worthless. Again, freedom of speech is not freedom from criticism of speech.
