You know, there's a correlation between social media use and depression. The more time you spend on social media, the more likely you are to be depressed. I didn't get a cell phone until I was 15 and started driving. I actually know people that have bought smart phones for their kids that are under the age of 10.

Children and even some teens don't have the maturity to handle a smart phone. Between the apps and the internet kids can get in a hell of a lot of trouble. Not to mention those that get busted for sexting, cyber bullying, etc. that can mess up their lives forever. Unfortunately teens just don't think of the consequences of their actions.

I'm not saying being a helicopter parent is the answer, but we all need to remember that the smart phone didn't exist when we were that age and they have so many more capabilities than the old flip phones did. Not to mention the younger generation (and I'm only 27) is SO much more tech savvy than we ever were. Most of them can find a way around things if they choose-unless you don't buy them a smart phone to begin with.

Thanks for the information, every little bit helps.

A family member bought my daughter/granddaughter an iPhone last summer when she turned 12. She is now 13 and I see a difference. She definitely isolates herself more and we can’t seem to get her to engage any activities, other than just hanging a few like minded new teenagers, that I don’t view as healthy. I do believe she values that phone more than any of her family right now. We’ll work through it. At least we see it and are trying to fix it. I see so many other children out there with parents that either don’t know enough to control the phone or just don’t care or recognize it as a problem.

I see this being a national problem in the years to come.

SFC (Join to see) - I'll be honest, as a teen if I got grounded and had my phone taken hostage by my parents, I just got sneakier. When my son gets old enough I'll be looking into limited phones or some way to lock out apps and web browsing. Hopefully they'll still be making flip phones lol.

Norah Julmis - I use the Verizon Family Base Plan to limit and monitor my daughters phone use. I restrict her use during night sleeping hours and school and homework time. I use a Norton Family Product to monitor and restrict her laptop use. It's not easy, it feels like I'm at constant war.
