SGT Jim Arnold - Churches are the bastions of "faith" in a higher power. If that higher power wants those churches to be able to do good and charitable things, I'm sure that that higher power can do so - even if the churches are paying fair taxes.

How about we compromise - if a church has less than a certain number of members (500?) then it can claim tax-exempt status. However, if the church pastor has multiple mansions and flies on church-owner private Leer jets, maybe he's lost his tax-exempt protections.

Joel Osteen, a pastor, has a net worth of $40 million dollars. How does a non-profit church pastor get a net worth of ANYTHING? Much less $40 million dollars? And he isn't even the richest pastor in the US - he barely makes the top five. That's an abuse of the church and the tax-exemption they enjoy.

MAJ Bryan Zeski - yeah I will definitely agree about Osteen and his ilk. maybe some type of IRS audit to ensure they do provide charitable things. I know he seems to abuse it but there are others that don't and don't need to be interrogated by the IRS. I wouldn't wish the IRS on a snake but that's another story
