Excellent post, CPT Jack Durish. Thank you. I also believe the author is addressing the problem of evil in a correct way...those who are looking for additional gun laws are the same individuals that want citizens to be increasingly dependent on something other than themselves. And that approach does make one a more easy target for evil when it comes.

This is a great article, Jack. It's a great summation of how many feel. Too bad people from both sides of the issue cannot come together on this instead of making headway off of the latest tradegy.

There is too much to gain by the extremist on both sides to keep this "gun" issue front page.

I believe we are simply seeing a continuation of what was seen in our "wild-west" days, a person, scared about their future as a "nobody" wanting to make a name for themselves. Except now it is instant.
Also, there are a lot more people in this old world. In 1880, Billy the Kid (for a well known example) was one in 50 million. Today, Kelly is one in 325 million. So, by those numbers we come up with about 6 more "Billys" than when he roamed the west. I think that is about what we see.
Are things any more than 150 years ago or are we just more aware, nationwide, of the events?
Just some food for thought.

Of course, this goes back much further than the 1880s. However, I do think we are more aware of the wanting to "be somebody" than prior to international and national coverage of this type person.

SSG Robert Webster - I will ignore your personal attacks, but you actually made my point for me. Violence (or evil) is common among us, but not nearly as widespread as many wish to think.
Perhaps had you read my comments as written, you would have seen this point and saved yourself the trouble of all the vitriolic comment.

But then again, if you want something contradictory to what I said in my previous statement, You might want to read the following (it also has data information available in several formats):
https://cjrc.osu.edu/research/interdisciplinary/hvd/homicide-rates-american-west

But then again consider the source and whether it was or is agenda driven or not. In this case this is a part of the Historical Violence Database of The Ohio State University's Criminal Justice Research Center which definitely is driven by an agenda. Also note the individuals pursuing this project:

If you really want to know and understand what the current problem is really all about, you could start with President Johnson's Great Society programs and work yourself to today, to include the Gun Control Act of 1968, the creation of the ATF in 1972, and then the Gun Control Act of 1986 when things really started the downslide into the cesspool that we have today.
