Disturbing and disappointing indeed. The widow wanted closure and seeing the body should have been an expected request. The fact that they are still finding remains of him in Niger gives us a very disturbing picture. As painful as it would be, she deserved a better answer from our DoD as to why she couldn't see any part of her husband. Thanks for the share.

My 2 cents is that the family members want closure, but in some cases they don not need to have their last vision of their loved one in pieces or horribly burned. It would have been nice had the Army been upfront with her...

LT Brad McInnis - I've served as a Casualty Assistance Officer a few times. We don't dictate or determine what the widow or NoK want or should have. We answer all their questions to the best of our abilities to assist them obtaining the closure and support they need. So before any of us can say anything, all we know is she was denied seeing the body and it's unclear the reasons they gave her. This isn't the first time remains mutilated, disfigured, unrecognizable conditions have been buried. What the family doesn't need to find out weeks after burial that more parts of their loved one are still being found in another country. That's bad form.

MAJ James Woods - Sir - I salute you. They wanted to make me a CACO, and there was no way did I think I could do it. Turned it down. Has to be the hardest job there is!
