I just tried to find Mr. Chaleff’s bio which would reflect his actual performance and success in private industry. Maybe things have changed, but the courageous middle manager is like the canary in the coal mine. The canary finds the problem, but is a casualty, the problem is resolved and another canary is in place. That has been my experience in the Navy and private industry. The strategy is to know your limits and value to your senior management.
