I am reposting this, seems there are so many who think they know so much about the Korean Peninsula... I have seen people that think we are going to WWIII with the North, or think that it is to dangerous to hold the Olympics there this month.
Now to give some history to it all, this is not the first Olympics in Korea... 1988 was, and I was there stuck on the DMZ for the duration, but that was the nature of the beast at the time.
Also, if you think the few incidents that have happen along Z in the past few years is something new, WRONG! Incidents have been going on for almost 65 years, since the Armistice was signed July 27, 1953.
In that time period, numerous soldiers have been killed or wounded in that time. If you want a touch of what it was like especially in the past till when we turned the last US sectors over to the ROKs, October 3 1991. Visit the website, will find numerous picts, articles, videos on it about life on the Z.

I was in Seoul in 1988 also. I was not in the JSA. They gave a lot of tickets out to thought is Yongsan.

There is always rumble on the DMZ; even if the CINC tumbles, the DMZ will rumble. Every night after 11, the propaganda intensifies over loudspeakers, in the DMZ. The ROK is hosting the winter Olympics and the DMZ is alive with cross-border talks. If we wink, the DPRK will take advantage. The DPRK is instigating trouble with intent to draw the U.S. into war, so the Russians and the Chinese can indirectly tame "that American Beast".

Tell them like it is SGT Thomas Lucken. Interesting thing for me - one of my JROTC students was the daughter of the Korean Ambassador to Panama. She was a member of the Class of 88. She spoke, read, and wrote English, Spanish, French, and of course Korean. She was one of the translators for the games.
I was assigned to the JSA for the year 1994, arrived January 1994 and left January 1995. My hat was hung in the HMA for that year, and my room opened into the HMA. Those that have served at Camp Bonifas knows what the HMA is/was. Got my hat, mug, and jacket. Badge #93.

I was based out of Casey at that time (91-00) as a contractor. Traveled all over the 2ID area supporting the training systems. 83-84, 87-90 was with the Cav then, 57 missions on the Z.
