Today, I had the opportunity and privilege to attend a "fireside chat" and listen to General Stanley McCrystal, US Army, Retired, in my company cafeteria this morning. For those of you who don't know, General McCrystal is also a member of JPMorgan Chase's Military and Veterans Affairs External Advisory Council. I work in Third Party Risk Management for JPMorgan Chase, here in Columbus, Ohio.
To be honest, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from his talk beforehand, given what you read in the news about him (conservative or liberal), but I found him to be insightful, charismatic, forward thinking, and funny as hell.
His talk was about how to use the principles of agile military teams to transform your business by using examples from his time as Commander of the Joint Special Operations Task Force and pushing decentralized thinking and decision making to the lowest levels possible. It was basically about empowering your teams.
Plus, he had a lot of visuals, pictures, and anecdotes from his time in service. This was a treat! Plus, we were all given copies of his book, "Team of Teams"!
In reviewing his organizations website, I would have to say that the McChrystal Group has a lot to offer an organization, given what I've read so far.

One of the first things he said after he was introduced was that "After an introduction like that, I know what you're thinking, "I thought he'd be taller". Quite funny. One of the more stupid things I thought when I stood next to him was I expected him to be tall and burly, sort of like General Norman Schwarzkopf, who was 6'3. Nothing like that. Very fit and very professional.
