Been there and done that, not just in Thailand, but Subic Bay Olongapo & Manila, Hong Kong, Okinawa, and Japan. Then switch oceans to the Med, and do it all over again! I enlisted in the Navy in 1966, retired almost 30 years ago in 1990, and I I speak the language of the old Navy and walked the walk with 14 years of sea duty. Me and that Army warrant could talk for hours, and it would sound like a foreign language to the new Military, or might sound like code! I got a great chuckle reading this post!

MCPO Roger Collins when i was there it was all Martial Law... i got ‘adopted’ by some brothers that owned a Music Bar (no booze!) called ‘the Genius’. It was in the basement of the building and was all blacklight & posters with tables & chairs for playing chess or go or whatever. EVERYONE would practice their English on me & i’d let ‘em... free sodas & milk shakes & pretty girls to look at while they practiced their english ...

Youth is wasted on the young.

I remember over the door’s threshold was printed “to be a rock and not to roll”... for some reason that sticks with me.

That & accidently sneaking into the buddhist monastary... another story.
