I doubt it. I think he fired him for the flyover request and going outside the chain of command as he stated. I don't really think Gen Mattis cares what happens to terrorists in jail. You might convince me if he had a personal stake in the game like a close relative that was killed or injured by one of those bozos. However that is not the case and I can't see Gen Mattis becomming personally involved otherwise. Looks like a case of bad timing but a firing that needed to happen.
