Yes, i was a lot of the time. I actually enjoyed it, the solitude, normally reading a book. I've always been a voracious reader. Some are shunned for whatever reason, some prefer to be alone. I preferred it.

Yep-sure was.
I was also the kid who had to fight to keep from having his jacket stolen in the gym, kept a 2' stick in my locker to keep the bas&^%$ off of me between classes, and had to grow eyes in the back of my head to keep from getting a "swirlee" in the head. Had my lip split, two black eyes, and lost a lot of fights before I learned "how".
High School wasn't much fun, but I survived it, and moved on.
Annapolis wasn't much better, at first. That was different though, because it was all part of learning to be confident and earning one's place at the table so to speak. I still lost fights...but won some, and only got better from there.
I went from being a "loner", "shrimp", "nerd"...to an open, gregarious, "wiry" nerd :)

So sorry to hear of your younger days but I believe if you survived and we did, it built character in us all. Made some of us track stars or long distance runners, forced other to stand their ground and fight back. This plan to share a table or befriend the new kid or the geeky kid, the autistic kid or poor kid will go a long way towards eliminating school violence I believe!

Yep...the ol' "swirlee"...lol Got a few of those in 7th grade from the older neighborhood kids i grew up with.

Last March, we were introduced to Denis Estimon, a high school student in Boca Raton, Florida, who knew all too well the isolation kids face during lunch period when they find themselves eating alone. So he started a club called We Dine Together, dedicated to making sure no student is starved for company. Steve Hartman catches up with Estimon and his mission.
