A few years ago, I published my first novel of historical fiction...centered on the Russian Revolution. Over the five years of research and writing, I came to truly admire many aspects of Russian culture. As a (then) single, romantic writer-I probably fell "in love" with the tragic elder Romanov sisters-a difficult balance between who they "were" and what their family had come to represent to many.

Russians are romantics, pragmatists , and some of the toughest humans on the planet.

I think many Westerners...particularly Americans, have a hard time remembering that Russia's been around a long, long time-much longer than the 70 years it was the USSR. That's probably because their best achievements often coincided with their worst atrocities...and their greatest heroes often emerged from their most oppressive regimes.

"The Great Patriotic War" as the Russians called it provided some of the best examples of my statement, " ...their best achievements often coincided with their worst atrocities...and their greatest heroes often emerged from their most oppressive regimes."

It's hard to forget the crimes committed by the Red Army during the invasion of Germany, or the way they treated prisoners and even their own soldiers...but so too is it difficult not to recognize some of their victories as being nothing short of epic. Hitler certainly underestimated Stalin's ability to match him pound for pound in ruthlessness.
