My boys always had chores, it is how they earned their allowances. When they were old enough to drive, they had to have summer jobs to pay for the gas in whichever car they used. I did not make them work outside the home during the school years, since that was their job and they also played varsity soccer and travelling soccer. Both turned out to be productive young men.
