This Valiant captain who chickened out from abandoning ship after attacking American shipping in view of Spectators on the beach was awarded German medals but he pissed off Adolf Hitler telling him that he was dedicating too much effort on the Eastern front and not enough to the U-Boat effort in the Atlantic. A general refused Hitler's order to reprimand him and stated that he should be able to tell the truth. I have been through U - 505 submarine at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. The submarine is now inside the museum was so it is not exposed to the elements like it was for many decades

My father (RIP), sunk by a German U-boat in the 1943 and later served in the US submarine service from 1950-54, would have tipped his cap to the German skipper at his passing. Pop never held any ill will to the enemy following his service in WWII or Korea.
