A beautiful young lady. It’s a crying shame that the suspect was able to purchase a firearm. What happened? Aren’t ALL firearm purchases supposed to be run through the federal database? Weren’t the military services suppose to provide this very type of information so that the gun sale wouldn’t have gone through? I am under the impression that California has some of the most strict gun laws around. If I am wrong PLEASE PLEASE correct me. I don’t want to be like a democratic liberal and not be informed.

SFC George Sease, Yes, California has very strict purchase laws. You must pass a owners test for safety, a criminal background check, a 10 day waiting period. However, if the military fails to report a service member that was discharged with a condition that would not allow possessing firearms, that is the failure. It was not the back ground check that failed, it was the military agency responsible for making the report to the database that did. I hope that after NCIS completes their investigation, they hold those responsible for failure to report with consequences.

Horrifying. We need to make this information available for screening purposes. Another law will solve nothing

After an investigation will be completed, it will be found that the military agency that was tasked with reporting the dishonorable discharge and this former Marine's inability to own firearms was not properly done and most likely there will have been others with similar results. Very similar to the Texas Airman who shot up the church about a year ago, when the Air Force did not perform it's due diligence. They found that the command had not reported many airman that should have been on the "Not Allowed to own firearms list". It is a shame that we have these laws on the books but are not followed by those responsible to perform them. Unfortunately, this Petty Officer was a victim of this carelessness. I hope that those responsible for this serious error be held accountable.
