SecDef James Mattis at talk at military academy in South America details need for Space Force highlighting defense of satellites. This is the story line in often referenced 2015 novel "Ghost Fleet" in which China destroys US communications satellites in opening act of a Pacific war. No mention of military members actually being in space, there has long unsubstantiated talk of a "Military Space Shuttle". Have not heard a good reason why space defense can not continue to be run from existing "Space Command"

Good share. No the Space Force isn't a bunch of guys like astronauts but fighting in space (how would they even get there?). It's the ones we already have--mostly smart technical/cyber people, AF & contractors, who work this mission already. It's simply acknowledging a new direction, emphasis and reorganization. I'm not sure the general public understands this from the media hype. Nor do I think our POTUS does either. Mattis does.
