Well there was a lot a chatter in regards to the last coup attempt of US involvement - in particular us being aligned with Fetullah Gülen.
The US State Department attorneys stated “Because of the large amount of money that Gülen’s movement uses to finance his projects, there are claims that he has secret agreements with Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Turkic governments. There are suspicions that the CIA is a co-payer in financing these projects.”
As well Gülen used to broadcast over the CIA’s Radio Free Europe into the Islamic regions of the Soviet Union. It's interesting as well knowing that Gulen was granted a visa over the objections of the FBI, the State Department and the Department of Homeland Security. Three former CIA operatives intervened and managed to secure a permanent US residency for Gülen by writing endorsement letters for Gülen's green card application in 2008.
Despite Erdogan's reasoning - it will be interesting to see where this goes.
