Much of his success was due to his superior technology and discipline in his army; there wasn't much that people of the time could do against his forces. I wouldn't say that makes him any sort of amazing leader or genius, as he didn't develop any of those technologies himself, but he did showcase their ability.

I would say that the ability to recognize and take advantage of technology is a big part of leadership.

Not many people understand that the sarissa made the Macedonian phalanx the doomsday weapon of its time. Alexander deserves credit for his political decisions in ruling conquered peoples, but not so much for his battle acumen.

I do think Alexander displayed genius. He neutralized the chariot as a weapon of war. He used subterfuge to get Darius to fight the battle he wanted, and he treated the people he conquered decently, lowering taxes and building infrastructure that made their lives easier. It is my opinion that Alexander expanded on what he was given and inspired people. He picked good commanders and inspired loyalty.

I believe our country has a few great leaders and probably most of them in the military, sad though none of them are running for president, sadly.
