4-star admiral wants to confront China. White House says not so fast

Our number one trading partner gains the ability to project power out into the Pacific ocean using these man made islands, how exactly does this hurt us? China will eventually become a world power on par with the United States, it is likely that we will share common interests regarding the need for peace and stability to facilitate trade that is vital to both our countries. If the Chinese buildup is making our other allies uncomfortable, we should begin helping them build their navies. Perhaps even sell them a few ships that are more than equal to what the Chinese are using.

I suspect China would reverse course rather quickly once they realized that their actions in the Pacific would bring about the rebirth of Japan as a major naval power.
