For those not killed or permanently scarred by battle, I believe that the separation of families during long deployments may be the most frequent, if not the greatest sacrifice

You realize that fact later in life, that’s why grandkids are so special, you grow up with them.

I would agree with you that being away from your family is probably the hardest thing to cope with. I've been deployed on ship away from my family (back in 90's) where you had to wait until you got to a port to sometimes make a phone call. With the technological advances of today, you can video chat your family almost everyday so it does ease the separation a little bit.
