Sad story indeed. One would think that they would care about their history and heritage.

Typically they had. As an author of historical fiction, I've always envied writers there because they had such a vast audience while Americans generally aren't interested. That seems to be changing as the nation commits cultural suicide.

I agree. Not to mention the vast array of information that one can get their hands on. Right at the fingertips.

CPT Jack Durish Agreed, the Brits have little respect for history!

My younger son married a Scottish woman.

During my time doing my family’s history, researching and compiling newspaper clippings and so on; I made several overtures to that family in Scotland for details of their family.

All of my entreaties fell on deaf ears. They never offered any family information for input into “our joined” family history. Their lack of respect and/interest into their Scottish history befuddles me to this day!

In retrospect, that family, living in a suburb of Glasgow chose to be different! The children were trained to not speak with Any Scottish brogue.

One daughter who was involved in the operation of a hotel and pub, did learn all types of Scottish brogues. “Morag” can shift gears into any brogue you might like to hear!

One would think the Brits would care about their historical sites and heritage, but we Americans are hardly blameless with regard to that. At Gettysburg, commercial development has encroached on the field of Pickett's Charge, along Steinwehr Avenue. At Ligonier (western PA, a French & Indian War site), the town and commercial development have encroached upon the battlefield of 12th October 1758. While the fort has been reconstructed, the town is all around it. Antietam is one of the only battlefields I know of where modern encroachment has not occurred (not that developers haven't tried), probably due to National Park Service having acquired the land first. At Gettysburg, only those parts of the battlefield owned by NPS are safe - the rest is up for grabs. So, before we criticize others, we should be sure our own house is in order.

Who's criticizing? I didn't and I haven't noticed that any of the other respondents have either.
