The new round is a 6.8mm x 51mm, same length as a .308/7.62, so the new rifle from Sig is more like an AR-10. Not sure about carrying more ammo; the magazines are 20 round capacity but they may increase that as the fielding process goes forward.

SIG already has its 716i, which is a 7.62 variant of the AR platform, so they didn't have to do very much to come up with this weapons system. I have shot a 716i, and it is a great shooter.

The Army is always going to want that longer range but I don't think anyone is forgetting battle drill 6 (room clearing). CQB has been a big thing this millennium so the close range fight is still a consideration.

SFC (Join to see) - in typical army fashion they will issue 2 weapons like the old m231 port weapons. One for far one for close. Joe can just keep the extra one in his 68lb pack. No problem.
