5 Mistakes that servicemembers make when attending a job for
1) Show up without a mission. Everything that you do in the military is driven by and operations order. So write your own 5-paragraph operations order
2) Show up to the employer table without researching the company or knowing what roles are being currently recruited for.
3) Not showing up with a resume or showing up with multiple formats of resume
4) Expecting the recruiter to match them with a job
5) Showing up with the entire family to include children and strollers.
What can you do to overcome these 5 mistakes
1) Write your own Operations Order (OPORD) So afterwards you can do an After Action Review (AAR) to see if you accomplished the mission, what went right, what opportunities are there for improvement
2) If you are interested in a company and you did not get a chance to research the night before step outside of the venue and take out your cell phone and visit the company website to see if you can get a 10 minute crash course. SOMEthing is better than NOthing.
3) Bring copies of your resume, but you choose the format. You do not want to give me several versions and want me to pick. Be confident in the resume that you put together. Civilian no more than 2 pages and go back 10 years.
4) Do not expect the recruiter to match you with a job. Identify 3 strong attributes that you will bring to the organization and sell yourself on that. If you have done your homework you will have an idea what is available, where is it located and how your skills match up.
5) I love to see families and children but a job fair is not the place. An employer will look at that and say that can be a potential problem. Will they bring their family for the interview. Find child care for a couple of hours why you are searching for employment.

Dress professionally-I always wore a suit and tie, but a nice shirt and slacks should be the minimum for guys. At the very least make sure the clothes are clean and pressed. At the other end of the spectrum don't dress like you're going to the club.

Great its important to get the word out. The transitioning offices are really stuck to the DOL script that they do not get feedback from employers especially if you have a employer that is a veteran
