I had the great honor of meeting Lucille Ball twice. Once backstage in Philadelphia where the musical "Wildcat" performed it's last show on the road. I was a member of my college's thespian, speech, and debate team. It didn't make it to Broadway, but not for her lack of talent. The show's script was simply too thin. However, it amused me when I enlisted shortly thereafter and found Army bands playing the show's one hit, "Hey Look Me Over" whenever we passed in review. On that first meeting she came to my rescue. Immediately after introducing myself as a student of the University of Baltimore, the next young man behind me introduced himself as a student of the University of Pennsylvania. The haughtiness in his voice and the look were obvious snubs at my school's lowly status (although my partner and I defeated his school debate team the next day). Ms Ball responded without pause, "We'll just have to forgive you for that" and he turned beet red. The second meeting was following a conference she hosted on the subject of comedy at the school I attended in Hollywood to study script writing. She was a woman you listened to and were rewarded with her experience and talent. I was always a great fan.
