This is a news story from back in 2013, when a group of people in Mexico attempted to rush the border near San Diego and were pushed back by Border Patrol agents using less than lethal methods including Pepper Balls and Tear Gas. The stark contrast in how this event was portrayed (by this San Diego news station at least) compared to the coverage and discussion of the event that took place last weekend is amazing. Even an advocate for the would-be illegal immigrants praised Border Patrol agents for their restraint.
Now many of you know I'm not a supporter of the President (nor was I a supporter of President Obama) and I disagree with him on immigration; in particular his scapegoating of Mexicans and Central Americans and his proposed border "wall" which would IMO be nothing short of a colossally stupid and ineffective waste of U.S. taxpayer money.
That being said we have laws that should be enforced and a border that needs to be protected. We can't just have people rushing the border and our Border Patrol agents did their job last weekend just like they did in 2013. The difference is they are being vilified for doing their job now where they were praised for it in 2013 and that's not right.

The Cost of a Border Wall vs. the Cost of Illegal Immigration
The findings of this analysis show that if a border wall stopped a small fraction of the illegal immigrants who are expected to come in the next decade, the fiscal savings from having fewer illegal immigrants in the country would be sufficient to cover the costs of the wall.

That page makes a lot of assumptions, IMO it grossly overestimates the number of illegal immigrants it might stop and significantly underestimates the cost of the wall (in reality it would cost between $20B and $70B depending on the source) but in any case I agree wholeheartedly that we should be doing more to curb illegal immigration, my issue is that the wall would be ridiculously expensive and not very effective. Trumps wall is the kind of idea a 4th grader might come up with if you asked them how to stop people from coming over. Like so many of the President's ideas, it's one he pulled out of his behind during a campaign speech and kept repeating because people cheered for it.
The only way I can think of to spend more taxpayer money for less effect is if you literally light piles of tax dollars on fire at the border in the hopes that the illegal immigrants will get lost in the smoke and end up going back South.

We need a smart border wall, not a 3rd century solution
We have the technology to improve border security, and it would be much cheaper than a physical wall. Plus, it could be operational within a year.

Cynthia C. - Physical barriers make sense in urban areas but most of the border is is extremely remote areas where electronic sensors or drones can easily pick up people crossing and alert border patrol agents who can apprehend them before they can "disappear"

the numbers were put out finally 3700 male, 1000 female about 1000 kids. but the liberal news is yelling is all females and kids. And now the diseases they have that this country has cleared up. And no one has asked why the kids in the US are getting sick with crap we have not seen in generations or crap this country has not had in over 100 years could it be coming from these illegals going to school without vaccinations. Just food for thought.
