Reflecting on Bush, the Last Combat Veteran President - In Military

Thanks for writing this piece, SSgt Wes ODonnell. Reflecting on H.W. Bush’s service, it’s easy to see how much he loved his country at an early age:
- After Japan’s surprise attack at Pearl Harbor, Bush decided that he wanted to become a naval aviator.
- Joined the Navy on his 18th birthday and became one of the youngest Naval aviators in history.
- Was the lone survivor of an attack on a Japanese installation on Chichi Jima on September 2, 1944.
- Lost both of his crew members when his plane was shot down. He was recovered in the ocean 4hrs later.
- Flew 58 combat missions & received the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals.
