Not spending $5 billion on a worthless wall is not "abandoning national security." There are many other means to improve our immigration system than throwing away $5 billion on a pipe dream.

MSG (Join to see) - I just used the idea of drones for example. They can be used in some areas. There are also other types of hi-tech which could be employed. A wall is not the answer. It can be gone around, under, and over. It will not stop in inflow of drugs one iota. It will not stop an person determined to get in. Do you believe a person determined enough to walk a thousand miles to get to the border is going to be stopped by a simple wall? I don't.

MSG Stan Hutchison - Your arguments use talking points from liberal news media. They do not deal in facts. I have worked literally hundreds of burglaries of all types. The vast majority involved unlocked vehicles or structures. Unlike the movies and TV, very few in number involved areas that were difficult to enter such as very high fences, security systems, etc. The bad guys prefer easy pickings with a low chance of being caught.
The first line of any defense is a wall or structure sufficient in and of itself to deter or repel the vast majority of people attempting to enter. In Iraq and Afghanistan, we used high and thick walls surrounding the FOBs, monitored by technology and manpower. We used technology and manpower to control who entered and left the FOBs via entry control points.
People and technology are there to monitor, control, and capture those who manage to overcome the obstacles. They are not, and never should be, a first line of defense.
Technology breaks down and requires constant monitoring and replacement. Manpower is one of the most critical and expensive parts of any security system. Manpower is limited by payroll, injuries, days off/leave, additional assignments, etc. You seldom have the manpower you need, day after day, to control an area.
If you check with any Police agency or security agency, all will tell you the same thing I wrote above. The cheapest and most efficient method of securing an area is a structure and locked doors/windows.

MAJ Montgomery Granger Thanks for that share. The comments already posted show how contentious this issue is. If the shutdown goes on any length of time it will only get worse. Flint and Steel coming together.

A wall might not stop all illegal border crossings but it will slow them down!

How are the walls working on your house/apartment? If you were missing one would you want to fix that situation? Wouldn't that be a priority for you?
