Ernest Hemingway could have been killed had it not been for an Italian soldiers body shielding him from a Austrian mortar shell on 8th July 1918. The Italian soldier who protected Hemingway from the full brunt of the blast has been a mystery until recently. Ernest Hemingway ended up having a love affair with a nurse that influenced his book Farewell to Arms.
