SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL Piqued my curiosity in a post on dog tags. I entered the Marines before they changed to SS numbers on the tags or even used them for identification.We were issued 7 digit id numbers.Have they returned to id numbers on tags?

Too late. Really, if you've been in the Army, your SSN is all over creation. Just for one small example, everytime someone filled out a 600 form for you at sick call or whatnot, they wrote down your social, your name, your unit, and your DOB. Every form I can remember (and in the Army, that's A LOT of forms) asked for your social and your DOB. Any business these days granting credit or performing any other sensitive activity on the basis of an SSN is wrong to begin with.

No idea. When I went in (1984) we had our SSN punched on our tags. Would be interesting to see if they went back to a service number!
