During the Civil War a bayonet charge by an attrited Main Regiment against a vastly larger force on a flank probably saved the day by not allowing the enemy to roll up the flank of the Union Army. The Regimental Commander so impressed the generals that his unit was put in the center with the notion it was a safer location. The next day the Confederates tried to roll up the center with Pickets charge. The Regimental Commander's impeccable leadership led him to be was promoted to MG by the end of the war. His men very much loved and respected him.

Sorry for being verbose.
