Current estimate of illegal aliens and asylum seekers is over a million apprehended by year end. Also, the estimate of those additionally crossing the border is around twice that number. Just read that approximately 70% of the agricultural workers are illegals. A labor participation rate of 63%, meaning the availability of 37% for jobs. Plenty of laborers. As to the prisoners, many communities use voluntary prisoner laborers that want to get out and make a few dollars while they are at it. I would not support forced labor.

Can vouch for some of that, see lots of Border Patrol busses around here during harvest times. Somehow think the scale of workers needed to harvest crops goes well beyond the voluntary prison labor pool.

Has to be watched so people aren't abused. Same is true for field workers

Yes, what stood out to me is that prisoners aren't considered employees, so the potential for abuse seems to be front and center.

They are abused anyway. The prison "system" is geared to keep them in.

They would have to be paid mainly because they would be working for private businesses. Other wise the state would be giving them slaves.
