Good morning RP. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Our Galaxy's Magnetic Center." A black hole (Sagittarius A*) lies about 25,000 light years distant at the center of our Milky Way. The magnetic fields surrounding the center of the Milky Way can be photographed by the High-resolution Airborne Wideband Camera-Plus (HAWC+). The camera images data based on polarized infrared light emitted by elongated dust grains rotating in alignment with local magnetic fields. HAWC+ flies aboard a modified 747 named the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA). When combined with data from the Hubble Space Telescope, the results are (I think) astounding.

One-of-a-Kind Camera Added to SOFIA
The infrared camera called the High-resolution Airborne Wideband Camera-Plus (HAWC+) was installed on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy, SOFIA. This is the only currently operating astronomical camera that makes images using far-infrared light, allowing studies of low-temperature early stages of star and planet formation.
