It does amaze how intolerant the left is and how much hate they have for anything or anyone who does not fall into a line of thinking that agrees with them. I don't remember conservatives beating up Obama supporters. There are those on the left who perpetuate these type of behavior because they know in general they can get away withit. I doubt this made headlines for CNN, MSNBC etc,

It's about symbolism... the other side has to perform rituals to affirm their virtues, like most religions tearing down the idols of those they find impure.... The hat is such an idol in their eyes
