I find it interesting: "where the police had not induced reliance on a promise". Yet every police vehicle advertises "to protect and to serve". Does this not constitute a promise to all who read it? And, since this is the case (no responsibility to protect on the part of the police), does this not put on every individual the responsibility to protect themselves? Armed with this knowledge, I would urge everyone to get a gun, train with it, carry it, know when and how to use it.

Only LAPD has “to protect and serve” on their police cars. I have been driving police cars since 1981 on both the civilian and military side. Never drove one with that motto though.
The main point that everyone is missing is that the police are not responsible for the actions of criminals.

I am paying more attention to what is actually written on a cop car now. And you are right! I have seen one or two out of dozens that have a "protect/serve" message here in Florida but I would say over 95% of them don't. I believe this is a phenomenon of too much TV and the mind just sees it written on all cars now; when in fact it is not!
