Mines – first they have to be laid and we would avoid them therefore they are geographically limited. Although we were not good about that in the first gulf war but then the Iraqis were too stupid to turn them on. If they are laid we use specialized system to clear and regain control of that sea area.

Antiship Ballistic Missiles – We are the world’s leader in BMD and as LASER system come on line they will be easy to defeat.

Submarines – We have the best in the world save none but surface ship ASW is still a challenge. The new P-8 Orion is the answer to that threat supported by ship based helicopter. Keep the threat away from the battle group that is the game.

Supersonic Antiship Missiles – Again a repeat of the second threat. Advancements in Ageis and the small form factor of our destoryers give us a marked advantage in the arena. Remember you can have a supersonic torpedo that has a range of 3,000 miles but how are you going to target a US Navy ship that far away and not hit the 10,000 merchant ships in between.

Directed-Energy Weapons – We are the only ones that have them.

Case closed the Navy will continue to evolve and be the key to US foreign policy. POTUS first question has and will continue to be where is the nearest carrier. No one wants to know where and how long a B-1 or other weapon system will arrive only the clear symbol of US military presence overseas, the carrier.

From what I understand the Navy has no defense against Russian scramjet missiles.
Other than submarines and acting as a slow moving equipment hauler the Navy is pretty much already obsolete
With midair refueling we can get to the fight a lot faster.
How many planes can we buy for what an aircraft carrier cost to build and maintain?
Other than dealing with small players the Navy is now about as worthless as tits on a bull

Actually RAM was developed to counter the scramjet if the first line of defense Ageis/SM2ER fails. On the horizon is LASERs which will be 100% effective.

Interesting. Hopefully all the think tanks are abreast of these issues. It's hard to know as a civilian if the right priorities are being pursued. Especially under sequester. Thanks for sharing.
