For all those do deny that Maryland is/was a Southern State, note that this slave was born near Loch Raven, site of the reservoir north of and serving Baltimore in Baltimore County where I lived until I enlisted in the Army. Maryland was prevented from joining the Southern Rebellion in the Civil War by the merest of chances (President Lincoln in concert with the governor of the state prevented the legislature from meeting to vote for secession until it was too late)
