Thank you Dave, for this most interesting account of the events in St. Landry Parish, LA following the emancipation of the slaves. I drove through Opelousas many times while traveling from Ft. Polk to Breaux Bridge (near St. Martinville) and have never heard or read of this story until today.
Here is the irony (in my view) of this story in contrast to what we see happening today:
People are outraged at the sight of Confederate icons whether they be a statute, a flag or images carved in the side of a mountain, either tearing them down themselves or demanding their removal.
Yet these same people have no problem flipping the switch to cast their votes for the political party most represented and frankly entrenched in such actions even into the 1960's.
Perhaps their outrage should include the abolition of the democratic party since they have set the bar for what is to be included and set the precedence for bringing their demands to a successful conclusion. Should the radical left be allowed to "have their cake and eat it too?"
Just some random thoughts on a dreary, rainy and chilly Autumn day.

SSgt Ray Stone - Those exhibiting outrage at the sight of anything having to do with the CSA irrespective of its historical importance.
