There are minimum requirements of strength/endurance and certainly intelligence/scholarship. But that doesn't explain the difference in success rates; what does is "grit" or resilience. A person's ability to stick it out, to try again and again until successful.

CW5 Jack Cardwell Always thought of it as "never give up",Jack. It became quite plain in Marine Basic that the instructors were not just pushing your endurance(mental and physical)but your will to keeping going,quitting was not an option.
