This is a stupid mission, and negates the stated reason for withdrawal from Syria.
I understand why these oil fields are important, though. This was the place (along with near Beiji, Iraq) where ISIS would fill up fuel trucks to drive north and sell to Turkish interests.

I read Mattis giving Trump his initial brief. Trump did not care about the brief and his interests were relegated to having a military parade. The withdrawal from Syria has is the result of him believing he knows everything.
