We put many of our military people in bad situations with ridiculously narrow rules of engagement. I have said this many times over the last 18 years of Middle East fighting, we are turning our good infantry into police forces. At the same time, declaring terrorism to be a police matter inside America, we gave the local police forces weapons and vehicles that were formerly only seen in combat zones. We were turning our cops into infantry.

I do not agree with the pardons, military members must follow orders. But, I understand why Trump is doing it, many of the orders during that time frame bordered on the ludicrous.

Got an idea- why don't we let our cops be cops, and our infantry be infantry?

But lets not let our troop stand over dead combatants/terrorists. We are appalled buy pictures of our dead personnel being dragged through the streets and posed in pictures so why are we not appalled at this picture?
Are we not supposed to be better than these people or we just the same but wear the US flag on our shoulders?

As I stated previously, POTUS can clear him but his seniors, peers, subordinates, vets, and civilians know what he was found guilty of and charged for. A guilty war criminal should be ousted because that is what we expect.

SGT John S. War crimes are a big deal. Its not unusual for nefarious types to want to take others down with him. He was the one convicted and charged. That is on him. See something, say something. You can call it being a rat if you want but if I saw someone commit a war crime, I'm calling them out on it.

SGT John S. - Posing with a corpse is a dishonorable thing to do and that proof is in the picture. They would right to remove his Trident along with all the others involved in the picture.

Hmm, sounds like retaliation to me.

SFC Thomas Foreman - You can also retaliate if senior officers don't like the President's engagement.

Cpl Jeff N. you could also say that maybe the president, a man of no military experience, shouldn’t be meddling in personnel assignments of enlisted men

SFC Thomas Foreman -
Do you mean no military experience like Clinton and Obama as well? Since when is military experience a prerequisite to the office. Spoiler: it is not and has never been a requirement. Perhaps that is just a throw away line you like to use to not make a point, not sure.

The president is commander and chief of the armed forces by the nature of his office. He is not "meddling" they report into him as the civilian head of the armed forces. He is well within his lane to pardon and maintain the rank of the Chief. I am sure some in the command structure don't like their infamy being revealed but they have the full ability to resign their commission and leave if they cannot stand the rebuke. That is the way the system works.

Cpl Jeff N. oh I don’t at all dispute his authority to restore the sailor’s rank or set aside his conviction (which from my understanding he did not issue a full pardon, just the rank restoration) I’m more concerned about the president reaching that far down into the weeds to order a special forces commander to take on a troop that they don’t want and can’t trust. I’m a big fan of special operations being a self selecting community. This review board has been cleared by (forgive my ignorance here) whatever the Navy’s version of the chief of staff is and the secretary of the Navy. To my knowledge the president has not directed that Gallagher be retained in the SEAL community
