Respect is like a bank. You start an account with a small deposit. Sometimes you add some, sometimes you take away some. I cannot recall specific events where I respected officers more or less based on actions. But I do remember which ones I regarded highly and which ones I considered oxygen thieves.

Nothing. I'm bound by UCMJ to respect the rank. The person on the other hand has to earn it.

Thats literally what the articles question is... "what did an officer do to earn your respect?" Saying nothing, the person has to earn it sounds like a salty answer.

An officer has a lot of responsiblity He is responsible for the men he is in charge of. His men must be fairly treated every one the same and look out for their wellfare. because without his men he is nothing. The saying goes if your Plt. Leader orders his men to attack a position of 500 enemy troops. which way does the first bullet come from? USMC 59-63. Army 63-66 Semper Fi.
