The IG is responding to a request made by House democrats. I'm curious, did Congress make a similar request when Bush and Obama deployed troops to our Southern border?
On Oct. 25, 2005, the House of Representatives and Senate enacted a joint resolution (H. CON. RES. 274) clarifying Congress' stance on the effect of the Posse Comitatus Act on the use of the military on U.S. soil. In part, the resolution states "by its express terms, the Posse Comitatus Act is not a complete barrier to the use of the Armed Forces for a range of domestic purposes, including law enforcement functions, when the use of the Armed Forces is authorized by Act of Congress or the President determines that the use of the Armed Forces is required to fulfill the President's obligations under the Constitution to respond promptly in time of war, insurrection, or other serious emergency."
Perhaps House Democrats should focus on legislation for a change.

"The military should have no role in enforcing domestic law, which is why Trump’s troop deployment to the southern border risks eroding the laws and norms that that have kept the military and domestic law enforcement separate," he said.
So the debate comes down to whether or not securing the physical borders of the country constitute "enforcing domestic law" or providing for national security. Also to be reviewed (again) is what are the precise duties the military members are performing.
Since this type of mission has been reviewed ad nauseam since OJS in 2006, I doubt there will be anything of substance to come out of the review but I have no doubt it will be spun to the point it will no longer be recognizable.
