I was shuffling mountains of Top Secret material every day as operations officer in a strategic communications center when Daniel Elsberg was arrested and put on trial. I prayed for that trial knowing that Elsberg was correct, that the system was being abused to protect political rather than strategic material. It bothered me that our efforts to safeguard that information was diluted by the mass of it, and that culling out the political crap would help insure the security of strategic secrets. Sadly, the misbehavior of Elsberg's prosecutors resulted in a mistrial (and I have long suspected this was done to prevent public exposure of the problem). Thus, I am inclined to side with Snowden on this one. I think we are seeing much the same problem and a fair trial is needed.
