The Tuskegee Airmen have a special place in our military history. With the advent of the P-51, they provided badly needed escorts for strategic bombers. The Airmen were instrumental in killing many German pilots in dogfights. At the end of the war Germany had more planes than pilots, and many of the pilots were relatively inexperienced which was conducive to further loss of pilots. They also focused on air to ground attacks which greatly contributed to shaping operations to facilitate the attrition of the enemy before our ground forces became decisively engaged in the offense.
