Our son lives in a new development in the DFW area and they have them all over that area.

They are being vastly OVERUSED... At least in Wisconsin. While the roads leading TO THESE roundabouts are in almost undrivable to a REALLY undrivable condition they spend THE TOTAL BUDGET ON THESE DAMNED THINGS! So I ruin my front end getting to the one down the street which we DO NOT NEED BTW! Then I still have to wait until at least half the drivers figure it out so it's actually slower getting through the Intersection and WE'VE HAD THEM FOR OVER 25 YEARS! They need to fix the actual infrastructure FIRST! We don't need these damn things!

Turning circles as we used to know them in the 50’s and 60’s, were phased out because of side swipes and accidents. In the 90’s the FHWA started pushing the concept again. Probably the largest reason I believe is because they take the place of traffic signals, so there’s no ownership and maintenance responsibility. I know in PennDOT municipalities must own and maintain traffic signals (sometimes developers). The jury is still out about the claim of "proven safer". PS I don’t like them… a former PennDOT Official.
